Validating Demand Before You Spend a Euro

Most failed low-budget businesses did not fail at delivery. They failed because nobody wanted the thing. Validation is cheap; building first and asking later is expensive.

Three fast tests

  1. The conversation test: speak to ten potential customers. Describe the offer in one sentence and ask what they currently do about the problem. If they already pay someone for a solution, you have a market.
  2. The pre-sale test: ask for a deposit or a booking before you buy stock or build the full service. A €10 deposit is a much stronger signal than a compliment.
  3. The listing test: post the offer on a marketplace, local group or landing page and measure replies. If 100 views produce zero enquiries, the offer, price or audience is wrong.

What counts as proof

Proof is not likes. Proof is one of: a paid order, a signed quote, a booked appointment, or a repeat request from someone who is not a friend. Set a threshold before you test, for example: “I will buy the equipment only if I get three confirmed bookings in seven days.”

Cheap ways to test

  • A one-page site with a payment link and no inventory.
  • A single marketplace listing using borrowed or sample stock.
  • A local Facebook or WhatsApp group post with a clear price.
  • A stall shared with another seller for one weekend.

When a test fails, change one variable at a time: audience, offer, price, or channel. Changing all four teaches you nothing. Record every test and its result in a simple spreadsheet so you can see which version actually attracted buyers.
