Registration, Taxes and Insurance Basics

Rules differ across the EU, so treat this lesson as a checklist of questions rather than legal advice. Your goal is to operate legally without overspending before you have revenue.

Questions to answer locally

  • What is the simplest legal form for a solo business in my country?
  • Is there a micro-entrepreneur or self-employed status with a turnover threshold?
  • Do I need to register before my first sale, or can I regularise within a short period?
  • What VAT rules apply to my product or service, and is there a small-business exemption?
  • Which insurances are mandatory for my activity?

Documents to keep

  1. Registration number and proof of status.
  2. Every sales invoice, numbered and dated.
  3. Every purchase receipt, including small supplies.
  4. Bank statements for the dedicated business account.
  5. Insurance policy and any client contracts.

Insurance

Even when not mandatory, public liability cover is wise for services, food and events. A single accident can exceed your entire first year of profit. Ask an insurer for a micro-business policy and compare the excess, not only the premium.

Practical approach

Speak to your local business support office or an accountant for one paid hour. Bring your planned activity, expected turnover and a list of questions. That hour is cheaper than fixing a registration mistake. Keep the answers in writing and review them when your revenue or activity changes.
